I Am Not, I Can Not
Creating self-compassion & other unusual ideas
Creativity,
is the ability to produce
original and unusual ideas,
or to make something new or imaginative.
(Cambridge dictionary)
Today, we are looking at
Using our creativity to
create self-compassion.
Let’s say you’ve run into strong emotions.
I know what it feels like,
When you feel as if you’re about to explode,
wanting to be something
That you’re not,
Or wanting
To do something
That you can’t!
Or having to do things
That you prefer not to do.
So, we both know what that feels like –
Depressing, sticky, explosive.
Well, wait,
Let’s take another look at this.
Maybe this feels bad,
Because we think it’s not ok
To feel this way.
We’re thinking:
“We shouldn’t have to feel this way.”
Now, since we ARE feeling this way,
Let’s experiment with
creating self-compassion:
We are going to separate this experience
Into two different elements:
- All the thought-stories
about “how things should be different.” - What it feels like in the body.
From now on,
We are focusing on element 2.
I invite you to take a moment
And write down
what it feels like in the body.
And now,
Say YES to THAT.
Not to the thoughts and shoulds,
By the way.
Only Yes to the feeling in the body.
(Inspired by Tara Brach).
Allow that feeling to be there.
Approve it.
That’s all it wants from you.
This is a taste of self-compassion.
How does it feel?
Creating this self-compassion,
is the true heart of creativity.
